On Tuesday, 16 January 2018, the T.M.C. Asser Institute’s International Humanitarian and Criminal Law Platform, The Hague Initiative for Law and Armed Conflict (HILAC) and the Kalshoven-Gieskes Forum on International Humanitarian Law (KGF) will host a lecture to commemorate both the work and life of Prof. Frits Kalshoven, who passed away in September 2017. Prof. Kalshoven, one of the name-givers of the KGF, was an internationally renowned expert in the field of IHL. During his life, Prof. Kalshoven made major contributions to the development of IHL, including his doctoral thesis on belligerent reprisals and as an IHL expert during the negotiations of the 1977 Additional Protocols to the Geneva Conventions. Dr. Robert Heinsch (Associate Professor at Leiden University and Director of the KGF) will speak on the work and life of Prof. Kalshoven. Prof. Liesbeth Zegveld (Professor of War Reparations at the University of Amsterdam) will provide a more personal reflection on her cooperation with Prof. Kalshoven during their co-authoring of the book ‘Constraints on the Waging of War’. Prof. Christopher Greenwood (Judge at the International Court of Justice) will discuss belligerent reprisals and how the work of Prof. Kalshoven has influenced his field of law.
